Charity Golf Day Swings into Action for MND Association

The MND Association Cheshire Branch would like to thank everyone involved in a fantastic charity golf day held at Upton by Chester Golf Club on Sunday 28 June.

The event was organised by Mal and Gary Thomson, with proceeds being shared between the MND Association Cheshire Branch and the Wirral Group. While the final fundraising total is still being confirmed, around 30 to 40 golfers took part, enjoying a day of friendly competition while raising vital funds to support people living with motor neurone disease.

The golf day was organised in support of the Thomsons’ nephew, Chris Thurston, who lives in Ellesmere Port and has been living with MND for around nine years since his diagnosis. Chris is a member of the Wirral Group and regularly attends wellbeing meetings at the Hospice of the Good Shepherd in Chester, where he is well known to many members from both the Wirral Group and Cheshire Branch.

Chris was joined on the day by his wife, Katy, and their children, Joey, Isla and Esmay. It was a particularly memorable occasion for Joey, who, as a teenager, played his first full round of golf and, alongside his playing partner, achieved an impressive fourth-place finish.

Representing the Cheshire Branch, David attended throughout the day, while later in the afternoon Debbie Williams, Leader of the Wirral Group, spoke to those gathered about motor neurone disease, thanked everyone for their generosity, and highlighted the difference their support will make to local families affected by MND.

The Cheshire Branch extends its sincere thanks to Mal and Gary Thomson, everyone at Upton by Chester Golf Club, all of the golfers, volunteers and supporters who helped make the day such a success. Community fundraising events like this make a real difference, helping us continue to provide support to people living with MND and their families across Cheshire and the Wirral.

We look forward to sharing the final fundraising total once it has been confirmed
